This is it! This is my favorite time of year.  Warm weather, the vibrant burst of color everywhere. When the flowers begin to bloom and leaves cover the skeleton branches of trees, I feel like the weight of many winter months and the blanket of flat colors is pulled off of me. Everything in my perception is brighter, more colorful, and filled with more joy.

The beginning of May is when the balsamroot flowers are in full bloom. It’s such a great sight to look back at the foothills from afar and see fields of yellow flowers amongst the green, rolling hills. Even greater is to BE in the hills on the trails passing through fields of the blooming flowers. You can’t tell me that won’t put you in a good mood, right?

One of the amazing and coincidental things this year is that the full moon was expected during the peak bloom of the balsam root. The unfortunate part is that clear skies were not as predictable, though. Because of that, I was reluctant to book the Moon Portraits Sessions for clients. However, on May 10th there was a clearing of the sky and mine and my partner’s schedules were open. So, I grabbed her, and set off to capture our own Moon Portrait. I have captured this moment for others, and even myself, but not for us.

While standing in the field of flowers, I was so excited with anticipation of seeing the photos created for us!

 I picked the perfect field of blooming balsam root, knowing when and where the moon would rise above the horizon. I planted my tripods with two different cameras and focal lengths. One tighter for a better zoom, one wider for a scene capture. While the moon was rising, we ran through some poses together, but mostly focused on having a quality experience together. 

The anticipation of seeing the images and how it all turned out was suspenseful. While standing in the middle of the balsam root field, we had no perception of our relation to the moon.  But when we saw the images, we were so happy how it turned out. Perfectly planned. Perfectly captured. Perfectly us.
